“How Compliance And Monitoring Team Killed My Husband” – Akwa Ibom Woman Narrates

Fourteenth day of April was a bleak day for Mrs Akaninyene Nnonno, a mother of five and petty trader in Akwa Ibom State as the news of the untimely death of her husband, a 38-year-old tricycle operator ‘hit’ her.
Mrs Nnonno a 34-year-old pregnant mother was said to have been made a widow by the activities of the Compliance and Monitoring Team (ticket sellers) of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Transport and Petroleum.
This happened less than a year after the untimely death of Mrs Anwanabasi Eshiet, a mother of two who died in the brutal hands of the monitoring team of the same ministry in the state.
Recounting her loss, the young widow lamented that her husband’s untimely death had truncated the future they both planned for their children.
The petty trader who recounted that her husband met his untimely death shortly after dropping off her goods at the market, lamented that life was only made easier for her, especially with her present condition, with the care, assistance and support of her husband.
“I was told that some of these ticket sellers were chasing an AKTC bus driver who knocked down my husband while attempting to flee”.
“Shortly after dropping off my daughter and some goods, I asked my husband to bring to me to the market, my husband’s friend came and asked me to follow him, that my husband had an accident. We were initially informed he was taken to TOAN office, when we got there, I was handed his torn shirt and wallet, but he was not there”.
“We were later directed to the Police Station, Itam, when we got there, we were told that he was later taken to the hospital, that we should wait for the DPO. We waited till the man finally arrived hours later. He informed me that my husband was dead. I have not been allowed to see his corpse, but they told me that he was hit on the chest and forehead, and that he was taken to one mortuary along Atiku Abubakar Way”.
” I don’t know how to start or continue my life from here, we were struggling together to care for these children, now look at my condition, look at the hardship their reckless attitude has put me and my children through,” she lamented.
Narrating the circumstances which led to the death of his member, the state chairman, Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Mr Effiong Effiong said his deceased
member met his untimely death along Urua Ekpa road while bending by the side of the road to fix a fault in his keke.
He recounted that the Compliance and Monitoring Task Team were chasing an AKTC driver, who in an attempt to flee knocked down the innocent Tricycle rider by the side of the road.
Effiong who disclosed that his association has been liaising with the state ministry of Transport and Petroleum to secure some assistance to the bereaved family, however promised to push hard to ensure that the pregnant widow is well cared for.
The TOAN chairman disclosed that the AKTC bus driver had been arrested by the polic and must be made to face the full weight of the law.
When contacted, the Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum, Mr Orman Esin described what happened as an accident.
“What happened was an accident involving a driver, members of our team and the victim. However, we have met with the bereaved family and we have discussed on how to assist the family and everyone is satisfied and happy,” he said.
The Police Public Relations officer, DSP McDon Odiko when contacted promised to confirm any arrest in connection with the case, but failed to get back to our correspondent as promised.
While the ministry may be warming up to bury yet another innocent Akwa Ibom son and probably an envelop handed over as compensation for the loss of a husband, father of five and son to an aged parents, many have risen in outright condemnation of the reckless attitude of members of the monitoring teams of the Ministry.
A keke rider who does not want his name in print said, ” Please help us tell the commissioner for Transport to call his wild dogs to order. All our papers are complete, but why are we always the victim whenever they chase vehicles, and why on earth should they be chasing drivers in a busy city like Uyo? They should know that innocent people would always fall victims of such recklessness.”

Arsene Wenger is set to step down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season

- He has spent 22 years at the Emirates Stadium with three Premier League clubs to his credit
- Massimiliano Allegri among a few other managers have been shortlisted for the position at the end of the season
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has reportedly shown interest in succeeding Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger next season.
The Gunners will become coach-less at the end of this season following Wenger’s decision to quit his position as the head coach of the club this summer.
Meanwhile, news making rounds in Italy claims that the Italian born tactician might be joining the north London side anytime soon.
The 50-year-old manager has been on the radar of the Emirates Stadium outfit since it was clear that Wenger would be leaving his post this term.
Also, Arsenal will also be considering the current Juve coach over former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique – who wants £15 million after tax.

Allegri has led his side to three straight Serie A titles since he joined the club in the summer of 2014, and the Gunners will be hoping to tap into his wealth of experience managing a topflight.

The former AC Milan boss has also indicated that he will be hoping to managing a Premier League club sometime soon, but the Italian side will offer him a new contract after the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday.

According to Mirror Sport, Arsenal are expected to appoint a new coach before the World Cup kick off but will not be in a rush to announce their new coach as they intend to speak to all of the candidates and people of interest.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is known to fancy the idea of a young head coach - Patrick Vieira, Mikel Arteta and Julian Nagelsmann all fit into that category - while is also open to the idea of a bigger name.

Also on the shortlist is former Liverpool coach Zeliko Buvac, while Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers and Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim will be interviewed for the job. Germany boss Joachim Low has insisted he is only focused on the World Cup.

Arsenal are likely to begin a clear out of coaching staff but current Nunber two Steve Bould is likely to be asked to stay on as he remains highly regarded.

It would then be up to Bould as to whether he would want to stay even after the departure of Arsene Wenger.

Manchester United star, Romelu Lukaku, has talked in details about growing up in abject poverty in Belguim

Lukaku who may be wealthy now thanks to his bumper pay at United admitted that they were times he wore torn cloths
- And that his classmates made jest of him and his brother then
Manchester United star, Romelu Lukaku, has talked in details about growing up in abject poverty in Belguim.
The Belgian international is now one of football's best-paid players following his record £75m move from Everton last summer.
But Lukaku and his brother, Lazio defender Jordan, endured a tough upbringing in Antwerp after their footballer dad Roger retired.
The United star recalled living in an unheated flat and having to drink watered-down milk.

Lukaku who was tormented by his classmates for wearing ragged clothes told Belgian TV: "I realise where I've come from, and I realised at a very young age that I was living in poverty.
"I also became aware very soon that my parents were banking on me to be successful.
"Jordan and I knew that we soon had to turn our talent into money, as the way we lived was tough.
"For me football was the quickest way, so I invested a great deal of time in the game.
"My father is one of countless examples of footballers who fell into a black hole financially after their careers ended.
"It was very difficult mentally. I realised very quickly that we had no money.
"When the electricity went off it would be out for three days at a time.
"As for the heating, it would be off for spells of two to three weeks.
"I always used to drink milk in the mornings. I saw my mother adding water to it so it would last until the next day.
"I had to play football wearing size seven boots while my feet were already size eight. There was no money for me to get new boots.
"When I went to school I always wore clothes and shoes with holes in. As a kid you get bullied in situations like that."
Lukaku has returned to Belgium to see a specialist in race against time to be fit for the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
The big striker was forced off in the second half of United’s win against Arsenal with an ankle injury and is set to miss Thursday's trip West and the final game at home to Watford on Sunday May 1

Real Madrid players reportedly agog over Salah's potential arrival in the summer

- Real Madrid stars are reportedly in disagreement of a potential Salah transfer
- Los Blancos have been heavily linked with Egyptian following his eye-catching form
- Both clubs will play in the 2017/18 Champions League final in Kiev later this month
Real Madrid players are reportedly at war over the potential transfer of Mohamed Salah from Liverpool, Don Balon reports.
The Spanish media outlet said the Egyptian’s wage demands is causing problems at the Bernabeu.
The 25-year-old has been in sensational form this season, netting 43 goals in 49 matches in all competitions, which has alerted the likes of Real Madrid to a possible summer transfer.
And Don Balon claimed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos are already unhappy with the news of Salah.
The Egypt international is said to want £13.1m (€15m) per year to make a switch from the Merseyside to the Spanish capital.
And the reports also claim the two billionaire Manchester clubs are monitoring the situation with Salah.
The ex- Basel star was criticised by Jurgen Klopp yesterday for diving in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
“Yes I think it was a dive, was it?” the Liverpool manager said.
“Or he waited for the contact, I am not sure, so that is not what I want to see, that is not what he wants to do. But obviously it happened.
“With all the other situations, he couldn’t get any foul any more. That is not right as well. It was always like this and you have to deal with that.”
Liverpool’s final game of the Premier League season is against Brighton and it is a must win for the Reds to ensure a top four finish.
Klopp's men currently sit a point clear of Tottenham and three ahead of Chelsea in the race to the final hurdle of the season.
After the conclusion of the present season Salah will hope to make a massive impact against his prospective new club Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May, 26, in Kiev.
It will be Liverpool's first final in the Europe's elite competition in 13 years and the Merseyside club with be looking to win sixth title in their history.
Ironically Real Madrid's last defeat in a European Cup final was to Liverpool in 1981 and Los Blancos will be looking to secure their third consecutive title

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, met behind closed doors with former governor of the state and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aremo Olusegun Osoba

Osoba while receiving Amosun lauded the leadership style of the governor especially the peaceful conduct of the Congress in the state
- Governor Amosun, said his visit was a sign of respect and appreciation to Osoba especially for his role in the unification meeting

Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun on Sunday, May 6, paid a visit to former governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aremo Olusegun Osoba, at his residence in Lagos state.
The former governor, who was speaking at his residence, while receiving the Ogun state governor, commended Amosun for working towards ending the differences that existed between factions of the party in the state.
Osoba attributed the success of the Ward Congresses, held by the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the state, on Saturday, May 5, to the unity and understanding that now exist among party faithful.
Osoba, who said this is a pointer to the victory of the party in the state in 2019, stated that the past disagreement among party members is normal in a democratic dispensation, adding that disagreement is bound to happen in politics, but the resolution of such crisis is a sign of maturity.
The APC chieftain, who emphasised that conflicts must happen in a political setting, however noted that it is expedient for such to be resolved by progressives, to protect and sustain the legacies of statemen like the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Amosun, on his part, said the visit was a sign of respect and appreciation to Osoba, for his role in the unification meeting, recently held in his office, where loyalist of the former governor reunited with Amosun.
He said the party is now one big, strong and united family in the state.

Governor Ayo Fayose has accused APC of plotting to disrupt the PDP primaries

- The governor said the APC has hired thugs to attack opposition during the primaries
- The APC replied, describing the governor's accusation as laughable
Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, has accused the opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to disrupt the governorship primary election of the Peoples Democratic Congress (PDP) slated for Tuesday, May 8.
Fayose, while reacting to the aborted governorship primary of the APC held on Saturday, said the party is plotting to create violence at the PDP primaries.
He said: “Another worrisome development is the information at my disposal that the APC is plotting to sponsor thugs to disrupt the PDP primary scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 2018, so as to create the impression that violence is common to all political parties.

therefore call on security agencies to act decisively to nip this sinister plan in the bud. The police should not shy away from their responsibilities. Ekiti was adjudged by the police as the most peaceful state in Nigeria, it must remain so.
“In the last three years, our state has been peaceful and never witnessed any sponsored political violence or killing until this APC’s desperation set in.
“I also call on Nigerians, as well as the international community to focus their attention on Ekiti State from now on. Ekiti people must be allowed to choose their next governor under a free and fair atmosphere.
“I am alarmed by the violent disruption of the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in Ekiti state yesterday (Saturday), most importantly its implications for the July 14 election.
“What was witnessed yesterday (Saturday) was a show of shame. It is a sad day for democracy in Nigeria, especially from a party in government that prides itself as the progressive.
“It is a clear indication that the APC will fail woefully in the July 14 governorship election because apart from its rejection by Ekiti people, the party has become a house divided against itself, its centre can never hold.
“We thought that we had gone beyond the era of ballot box stuffing and snatching as well as violence and killings during elections until yesterday’s show of shame."
However, responding to the governor's accusation, the Chairman of the APC in Ekiti state, Jide Awe, said the governor's accusation is laughable.
He said: “It is laughable. He should not look for any alibi. If there will be disruption of the primary, it will be his own making. We will not have anything to do with the PDP and he should not meddle in our own affairs too.”
